AWOL Report

Hi friends.

This place is indeed growing some grass. I have abandoned it temporarily (ok for quite some time) in a bid to do well for my final ever undergraduate exams, then to play, and to tour.

Here's a sketch I did (during the Phuket trip) of the lovely Song Hye Kyo to appease you.

Song Hye Kyo. Done in Sketchbook Mobile on the iPhone.

Now, say HI to the graduate. *muffles snigger*

OK nothing to snigger about. I have a B+ average this semester. After all, I did try my best to chiong this time round. I have never been this consistent throughout a semester. and I am glad that I did prove something to myself.

I am now sitting in the office at 7pm on my first day as a full-time staff  at the Internationa1 Re1ations Office (1RO still, yes) having been offered a position in the MarComms team upon graduation.  And I am whiling the time away waiting for Kosmic Kristmas to start.

**Updates**
If you're curious - Hairdo by Aaron from NEXT @ Ion.

I have gone through some interviews with several companies after numerous applications, wasted trips to the Cognitive Neuroscience Lab for Duke-NUS Sleep Experiment (bad experience), chopped off my hair (again), slept a lot, danced a lot, and a wonderful wonderful trip to Phuket last week before Christmas with Xuzi. I can't wait to blog about that when I get the pictures from X.

Till then. (:

Hunger.

I came across @stooffi's post on her blog on this many days ago, and I want to blog about this too.

Have you ever thought about hunger and poverty?

Every 3.6 seconds, a person dies of hunger. 75% of them are children. Every 5 seconds, a mother loses a child. Everyday, hundreds die while we live our lives ignorantly.

We choose not to change this, or claim we don't know how we can help.

In Singapore, most of us fall short of nothing. We have homes, we have beds, a cover on our bodies, and most of all, excessive food.  We are the affluent societies who have these unbelievable excess of basics. But yet we are not really doing much to transfer our blessings to these people who are less than blessed.

Here, join me as we put in a little bit of effort. At The Hunger Site, sponsors will deliver cups of rice that correspond the number of clicks the site gets each day. 100% of the proceeds will go to charity, and you can choose to donate to other causes as well. This won't cause you anything, just a few seconds of your time.

Bookmark this site, and click on the button everyday. It's really this easy to give.

2♥

X and I had our anniversary celebration at Melt the World Cafe at Mandarin Oriental Hotel about a month ago. Here's a huge-ass picture for a teaser.

Foie gras.
Albeit a little extravagant, it was a great meal. It was a tossup between The Line @ Shangri-La and Melt @ Marina Oriental, and I'm really glad we came here. Also, I am a bit paiseh to say that I am a little bit suahku when it comes to good food.

But now that I am here, I want to declare that my taste buds are now spoilt, and am only receptive to fine food. *nudges X*

We had a fabulous time. The staff were super friendly and attentive, and the food was top notch. The ambience was great. And it was great having a nice, quiet meal with a little company from the cute kids nearby, and their very old ahma who was happily licking an icecream cone.

I didn't take a lot of pictures, but these were not all that we ate. I also surprised myself with my huge appetite, especially at the end for the desserts.

Also, spent a lot of time on Photoshop editing the food photos, trying to make them look like cinematic photography out of Wong Kar Wai's films. Ok far cry but indulge me, please.

Quite a private corner. Nice and quiet.

So, this is where my pure fruit juice came from. It was practically a puree.

Is it any surprise that my heroes here are ladies? Desserts FTW!
I will have a stomach left for ALL of these, I willed at the beginning.

Say hi to the freshest sashimi.

This is cute. I can hardly see my rice!

I love seafood. Haven't had oysters in ages.

Wagyu beef burger!
The beef patty literally melts. And the bread was so herbish and soft and fragrant..
I will never eat cheeseburger the same again.

TIME FOR DESSERTS!!!

Rose-flavoured macarons. Not too sweet, and award-winning sia. Very nice!
An unforgivable amount of chocolate treats.

Croqembouche. Profiteroles stuck together with caramel.
they won't fall no matter where you pinch from!!
Crepe in Orange Sauce. Literally soaked in the sauce. This is really really good.

My pinched profiteroles (:
and part of the caramel web.

Bite-sized blackforest and raspberry cakes.

This chocolate mousse is so rich. It beats Godiva milkshake.

Okay my taste buds are now spoilt I can only taste good food from now on so I will be a little more expensive to upkeep.

Also I am especially happy with these photo edits. Look very cinema!

The waitress's surprise. (:

Happy 2 years baby. There will be more to come (:

Papa & Mama I sort of Miss You

Even though we live in the same house.

In Vietnam, 2007.
I seldom see my parents and my sister, and when we do it is usually a very quick chat and nag. Otherwise, sis and I will sacrifice our beauty sleep and talk till the world ends at night.

Bickering aside, it is very nice to have a sister to share things with, to tease, to love, to advice (when she believes me) and to complain and 撒娇 to. It is also very nice to have such a slowpoke father who is tolerant enough of my impatient ways, and also to let me tease and complain 撒娇 to. Mummy, on the other hand is more impatient than me, but she is such a good chef and committed mum, and she also lets me make fun of her and complain 撒娇.

I feel so away all time and sometimes I feel really guilty that maybe I don't love them enough.

Ok byebye I love you.

ps:/ looking at this picture I realise my clothes have an amazing longevity. I still have those!

The Hands I've been Given

Just did this sketch of a photo I found in my Photo Library, with the Sketchbook App (from Autodesk) I just downloaded for my now-abit-obsolete iPod touch.

Dedicated to X. And also of the times in Tokyo!

Hoping to improve on my free-finger (it's damn hard to control thumb and fingers!) sketching on the iPod screen surface soon. It's so much harder than drawing with pencils.

I was itching to draw again ever since I looked through my cupboard of old stuff and found all my old drawings and paintings.

[Cue in the scouting for graphics tablet...]

Passion creates wonders

From @monkeyjon - you really got to watch this video. The artwork - the colours, the intricacy - is simply amazing.

This reminds me why I so loved art in the first place. Again.

On an unrelated note... did I tell you already that I'm in love with cute? This video is full of nose-twitching cuteness that comes in 2 extralarge cups.

Diplomatic Relations in Design?

I've been working on a flyer design for my office's event later this month. But the idea is now kenna buried. I is upset, so I am sharing it with you all here.

It was just plain boring for a flyer to have just words and flags. So I created this from scratch all for the purpose of sprucing up an flyer for a dialogue. (Of course the outlines of the chairs were from somewhere)

Now the visuals are relegated to 3 flags in its place.Because the chairs are thought to be disrespectful. The flags aren't even draped on the chairs. The chairs are painted with the flags, and it's meticulously done. It's not even sloppy. Also, haven't we seen the Union Jack on bags, tables, clothes etc?

When can we be less boring?

Happy Mooncake Festival!

Picture from Le Petit Connoisseur

Ok we all know that it's the Mid-Autumn Festival. I've been excitedly stuffing myself with mooncakes whenever I get a glimpse of a new box of mooncakes at home.

The double-yolk, the 4-yolk traditional mooncakes, green tea, wu-xiang.. All traditional mooncakes. And my mum also bought a mango-pomelo mooncake from Goodwood Park Hotel.

This time, Dearie brought a box of durian mooncakes for my family. It's the best durian mooncake I ever had - Black D24 Durian Snowskin, from Home's Favourite.

I'm a Secret Painter

School of Athens, Raphael
The Calling of St. Matthew, Caravaggio

Have I ever told you that I was an Art student? Art as in drawing, painting and literature.. And did I tell you that I am studying Art & History, and Film Art, for my graduating modules?

I'm so loving school right now. I actually can't wait for the lecturer to go through the next topics.

Adiós, Bates 141!

Byebye Bates!

Deadlines! Clientele demands! Mad rush!

Just give me a goddamn break! Sometimes all of the interns feel like screaming. The clients who can't make up their minds and try to be creative directors are getting on all of our nerves, and we can't manage them.

But at the end of it all, there were great people on the account management team.  I really enjoyed my days here.

Hello world

Hello World, here's my reappearance, EMCC has ended.

I didn't come out just to complain about my job. It's exciting, it's new, it's interesting. I've learnt lots. But BACKSTABBERS I WISH YOU HELL. I shall not elaborate. I've come to a conclusion that nobody really wants to listen.

On a better note, EMCC has finally ended. Woohoo. I sound happy right. Partially I am, because I get to rest a bit more, away from some of the high stress environments. I should be having post concert blues, but I'm plunging right into the Choreographer's Ball and Danzpeople recital. Pros and cons, cons and pros. I'm damn tired, but I know I'm gonna enjoy the process and product all over again. (:

Here's a shoutout to all my fellow dancers in Xuzi/Kevin, Karen and Weina's items!: Halohalohalo! Thank you all for being part of my ending journey in Blast. I've learnt a lot and I'm sure I've put you choreos out sometimes when I ain't able to come for some of the practices due to some work sh*t. Bleh. I'm sorry for that, I really don't know what to write on the *mandatory* cards, haha, but thanks so much I love you all.

These 2 months have been nasty, dramatic as carmen, insomniac when I was so freaking tired from late nights and practices and work but still can't sleep. But finally, tonight, tonight, (previous 2 nights, by the time this post is up) we're gonna get it right. Fortunate to have you all. Thank you. Thanks blast, thanks choreos, thanks dancers, let's make love in this club. (:

Blast rocks! (:

Life's a Crossword

"A six-letter word for love, a four-letter word for loneliness. my nouns and adjectives are mixed, but basically my word was lonely. you love, and you leave yourself open to vulnerability; you love, and you end up missing the person/thing not there; you love, and you run a whole gamut of risks knowing full well all the ways you can be hurt in return."

I got this from Von, her words for love and life are deep as usual. Puts my thoughts over the past few weeks into perspective.

Even though you don't know Von, you've cheered me. (:

TOKYO Prelude

I guess I owe you all a post on my trip from Tokyo, but I can't tell you much now because the pictures aren't with me. They are still with lazy soozey dearie. *hint hint hint HINT*

The trip started on 16th Dec with a flight to Tokyo, transiting at KL, with Malaysian Airlines. Mum was being the usual worry wort, and passed me various woollen sweaters and thick jackets for a 10 day trip, that threatened to explode my luggage. But I tossed them out anyway, to make space for my dance shoes and an extra pair of booties I had recently bought. :P and of course my new soon-to-be purchases.

One of my main concerns was my wardrobe in Tokyo. I didn't want to look touristy and Singaporean, mainly because I'm mostly embarrassed by the Singaporean tourists' antics when they are overseas... spoilt brats, naggy and complain-ish middle aged people, all complete with the all too cringeworthy accent. I can't recall how many times I've recognised a Singaporean family from a distant from the children's loud rants or whines for something on the street.

On the other hand, maybe looking touristy wouldn't warrant the nonchalant looks cast at us, because we look too much like the locals. Salespeople and registration staff chattered away happily in Japanese when we approached them.

Anyway, for the first time in my life, I took the plane trip by myself. Again, my worrywort mum toyed with the idea of making dearie wait for me at Narita Airport at 10am in the morning before I told her the trip takes around $100. Ok, slightly exaggerated, but still... I'm old enough lor haha.

On the plane from KL to Narita I sat beside this big, cheery American, although we slept for most of the way till the last hour. I was grumpy and was wondering whether I should just be anti-social and not speak to anyone beside the stewardesses. Just before the flight landed, we talked for a bit and he told me how it was good to have a stay at a ryokan, just for the experience of it. He said we'd have the best time in our life. He'd seen me desperately studying a map to K's House (where we were bunking at) and offered to take me to the train station and explain the routes to me. (Yay! I was secretly relieved)

His name was Glenn, and he's a businessman who'd travelled between Singapore, KL and Tokyo for over 15 years, and held double citizenship (US and Japan). And he was so nice. He waited for me at the checkout counter, because my luggage was checked and I was frisked. =.= All the time I was thinking.. Do I look like a terrorist to you? Glenn spoke in rapid Japanese to the train station staff and checked out the train schedule for me. Then he gave me his Suica (similar to Ez-link card) and bought the train ticket to Kuramae for me, saying that it was his gift to welcome me to Japan. Then he sent me off to the gates at the platform.

Yay!!! Thanks so much to Glenn.. I felt really welcome in Japan already. This was also the incident where I decided that, if I should get lost in the streets and there is some Caucasian guy who looks like he's at home, he's probably the best bet to ask for directions. Another incident reaffirmed my guess (:

It was an early train ride to the dormitory just after peak hour, so I had mostly a pleasant ride on the train, riding through the backgardens and backdoors through the residential areas. It was surreal, just thinking that I'd already arrived in Japan.

Ok , time to get off work. It'd be my first day of internship tomorrow, and I'll be back with more stories about Japan!!
