I'm a Secret Painter

School of Athens, Raphael
The Calling of St. Matthew, Caravaggio

Have I ever told you that I was an Art student? Art as in drawing, painting and literature.. And did I tell you that I am studying Art & History, and Film Art, for my graduating modules?

I'm so loving school right now. I actually can't wait for the lecturer to go through the next topics.

You must be thinking have I gone crazy?

For Art & History (HY2249) we are moving through the times, all the way from ancient Greek Art, to Renaissance and Baroque (covered this week). We will be moving to oriental and modern art soon and I am damn excited!

Got to hear stories like Greek myths and legends, Roman wars, religious wars and how great architecture forms were invented..

Looking at Renaissance masterpieces reminded me of why I was an Art student in the first place.  I'm simply awestruck by the mastery (the complexity, the depth, the technique) of these pieces. Though most of Renaissance and Baroque art deal with Catholicism and I am no Christian,  I can't stop fangirl-ing at these artists.

2 of my favourite paintings as posted above. You got to click on it to enlarge the images, to marvel at the details.

My fingers are itching I want to paint again.

  1. I like Caravaggio's work.

You'd feel there is something sinister about his pieces, especially when he is so apt with the lighting in his pictures, or rather the "lack of".

  2. Most of the artists in his time work with perspective and chiaroscuro.

Yeah agreed. His specialisation in tenebrism and extreme naturalism makes his paintings so realistic that this interpretation of a topic becomes sadistic and sort of grotesque.

    He's a genius.
