Vietnam 2007

The Budget Trip

This time we flew to Hanoi via Tiger Airways, and that means I finally went into the new budget terminal at Changi.

Nothing too unsightly nor cheap about the terminal itself, but look at the boarding pass! It's a single piece of receipt.

There is a Han's cafe at one end of the terminal, and there is nothing budget about the price too.
And then we proceeded to board the plane.

For the uninitiated, we actually boarded the plane by walking into the tarmac (where the aircrafts are parked) directly, not through any corridor. No pictures allowed while walking in there, so this was taken through the plane window. You can see the huge staircase set up for boarding the other aircraft. So exciting! You can feel like some VIP getting off his own plane for a few minutes.

And we fly!

Into the arms of warmth

I'm back! I was actually back in Singapore on Friday, 21 Dec. I just missed Daryl's flight, so that means that I wouldn't get to see him for 3 weeks in total. That's disgusting.

For the eight days (inclusive of flight time) in Vietnam, family and I were subjected to noise and air pollution, haha, but BOPIAN, must 入乡随俗. Incessant honking all around towns and villages eventually became a part of our stay in Vietnam, for both trips.

This time we went to places where tourists seldom visit. There was even this place where there were no tourists at all. It was this reservoir, which used be an open valley of many mountains, and walls were built to make it into a water catchment area. You can imagine how freaking big that reservoir is man. It's like the sea!

Anyways, here I am back in Singapore. But I ain't blogging about it yet cos the pictures aren't with me. But I will, within this coming week. (: It's gonna be interesting, heehee. Meanwhile, if you guys want to see photos of my previous trip in Vietnam, you can click on these links:

Vietnam 1
Vietnam 2 (scrap book)

The coming repertoire of photos will be different. Totally. I promise. (:

I miss Vietnam now that I'm back here. The pace of life there is so relaxed. But when I was there I couldn't wait to come back, because the air is filled with dust, and the honking is so terrible man. Haha. Always , the grass is greener on the other side, heehee.

And now I'm involved in dance and organising Exuberance VII. And I'm supposed to be at the PA now, practicing for Chingay, but my hip joints hurt like mad when I put weight on it, or try to move my legs around. Shittified.

And my papa got his new car already! It's such a change to drive this car from the old 10 year old car, all the controls are so sensitive, and there is a touch-screen control at the front of the car, replacing the traditional knobs and buttons for radio and cd controls. I sound very sua ku, but, cool right! Hahaha.

Right, ciao, shall be back with more pictures and an overview of my second trip to Vietnam. (:

Listen to some fruity advice

In the midst of being super duper busy, eat more fruits. ALL their benefits will be explained by the talking fruits, as below. Cheers (:

What the Tech?!

Konnichiwa! I am currently blogging from the pristine MacBook, while trying to solve the stupid Spyware problems on the lousy PC.

Just want to let all of you know that, if you ever face any spyware problems such as mine, please do go to the forums at WhattheTech.com and post your plight there. Experienced and trained administrators will provide you with personalised answers. (: Takes time though. These administrators are trained volunteers, so they have their own commitments as well. Each reply takes about 10 hours, presumably due to the time difference in Singapore and their own country.

It's a really good site (:

And you can also take a look at my own problem here. Bleargh.

We worked through the night! There was a technical screw up last minute, and so we could only present JT with draft number one - unedited photos with music.

HI WELCOME TO COLD ROCK! *kallang waves*

This will be the second and a half week at Cold Rock for me.

There was a customer who went past the outdoor seats during closing last night, and he asked for sugar-free ice-cream. (Our awnings had the tagline: if you can dream it, we can ice-cream it!")

For those who didn't press on Cold Rock picture in the other post, and those still in the dark, I'm working at a brand-new shop, the first franchise from Australia.

It feels pretty good to be working at a new shop, like there aren't any traditions to keep to, and the staff there are all pretty friendly. I really like working at this place. But I guess I gotta quit after next week already, RAG's gonna keep me pretty busy I guess.

I was doing the closing shift last night, after the camp and the dance pract. I was a zombie by the time i got to work, and got high on ice-blended caramel latte from Coffee-Bean. Luckily for that, because it was rush hour soon after. One of the reasons I got so shagged was because I got high the whole night before on no sleep, not much food, just spirit.

So I was surprised i actually managed to check mail and do an update ytd.

Closing is really tiring business. I'm on the closing shift 4 freaking times this week. But that means free cab rides for me, I don't mind that at all, muahaha.

On a ttlly randm note, my keyboard ist wkig wl. Ths s wht hpns whn i dnt press VERY HARD.
ROAR.

Oh, and it feels really good to be running and brisk-walking for 6km (yeah I mean the shake butt kind) on random days. Makes me feel very fit, and got back in record time (ok, just for my own slow timings anyway. But who cares, muahaha)

I love me.
And I miss you.

Options?

Teaching here is not really a tough job, or as I had thought it would be some weeks ago. In fact, there wasn't much work for me to prepare, nor was I expected to stay for work till very late. Perhaps it's just this school's requirement, because there are other secondary schools which make the RTs work really hard, like working out the solutions for the Math and Science papers. Haha, perhaps all I can say is, lucky me.

And precisely because of this, as our timetables are not really full, all the current RTs get a lot of time to slack past during the job, and we've gotten reasonably friendly with each other and close too! What with common subjects to talk about (the 'A's, the 'O's, funny things in our own JCs, the boyfriends, the ongoing SALES (!) and etc.) and ranting about the kids who don't give a damn about their work, and suggesting ridiculous ways, and more seriously, trying to come up with effective ways to deal with the "noise which always seem to come from the back".

However, it's been some kind of a culture shock to me when I started teaching here. For the first time in my whole rote-learning life, I've met kids in class who are simply not interested in doing well for their exams, nor believe that hard work reaps rewards. And kids who come from families so broken that they don't want to go home, much less care about their school work. And also kids with determination so weak that they give up on questions after a few futile tries. Even some who are doing their 'O's this year couldn't be bothered to put in effort for their work. But they are all very nice kiddies (:

I'd been thinking rather seriously about teaching. If I really cannot find a suitable way for myself to get into the fashion design, or interior design courses that I want, I'll want to go into NIE. It's not a last resort, but if there's no way for me to reach out for my own passion, I want to go into the education career. But it wouldn't be easy if I indeed made my foray into this option, for, ONE, I have many ideals of my own on how to teach the kids, and it would be hard for me to fulfil my own ideals (mainly because I don't wanna be just a teacher who helps kids to pull through their courses, I want all of my kids to be more determined, and get better results because they want to), for, TWO, most of these would clash with the conventional methods, and the goals that MOE puts forth. And if I do discuss it here, I might be blacklisted and forced to drop my ideals and delete my own blog, haha.

And this morning the NYWS Alumni had training. As I mentioned that a guy from an uber-rich European family snagged a place in a prestigious UK university by securing a scholarship there, the GP training in us took over and analysed the merits and demerits of meritocracy. You can imagine what we discussed la... what about the poor but smart kids? Should scholarships awarded be assessed on the awardee's family income? Then we went on to how if you start off rich enough and can afford the best education for your children, who grow up with the right kind of social circle, and then you'll continue to earn more money and have a richer family, and the cycle continues. But what if you started off poor? And you can't give your children the best education, more tuition and enrichment classes because you can't afford to? Well, one can be very determined and work very hard, and get a scholarship. And this is seriously not easy at all. But it is admittedly easier for these kids to go waywards. What if they are really interested in studying, and can't further their education because of the lack of funds, because the scholarship was taken up by someone else who obviously had the means to pay for the entire package? Not fair at all, isn't it.

Meritocracy does have its disadvantaged after all, it's not perfect.
